Local food-related events

Nillumbik Council are calling for people to join the Hurstbridge Farmer’s Market Reference group. It could be Council staff, stall holders, interested members of the community, local traders, tourism representatives. Is anyone interested in joining this group?

Has anyone been to Iggy’s Restaurant at Loyola College, Watsonia. It is run by the VET and VCAL students and according to the local paper uses fresh local produce. Good on them.

Darebin Homemade Food & Wine Festival  13-18 May 2013. Darebin Homemade Food & Wine Festival is a celebration of food traditions and sustainable food. The Festival will include seminars, workshops, a progressive dinner and more!.

St Andrews Feel Good Fest is on May 31st. If any growers have some produce they would like to donate towards soupmaking, can you please let Caroline know at carolineg@nillumbikhealth.org.au.

Friends of Bell St Reserve will be meeting again this Sunday from 10am ’til 12pm. This week will be exciting as we will be doing our first bit of planting! Morning tea will be provided.

Want any new hens? Edgars mission near Kilmore has rescued battery hens and is looking for good homes.  You need to: realise that they’re to be treated as family members, not egg machines; sign an adoption agreement; and collect them this weekend, or Monday at the latest, from Willowmavin (near Kilmore) www.edgarsmission.org.au/visit.

As we look more into the possibilities of developing local food systems, one issue that arises is distribution costs, both in money and energy used. This site offers some interesting information.

Know anyone in Brisbane job hunting? There is a permaculture job vacancy at Northey Street City Farm (Brisbane). The senior leadership role of Site and Events Manager asks for an intriguing mix of skills and experience. We’re looking for an enterprising individual with a strong history of managing people (staff and volunteers), as well as experience in project and event management. This person should possess high level building and maintenance skills in addition to some Permaculture experience.
