The Mushroom Shed is a local grower of swiss brown and white mushrooms and also provide 'grow your own' kits for people who want to grow their own mushrooms at home. They also do a wide range of herb and veggie seedlings, in pots/punnets - concentrating on heritage and unusual varieties, with over 40 varieties of heritage tomato seedlings available in Spring. You can see Mark and Helen at farmers' markets both locally and in other Melbourne suburbs. As a small producer, they sell only direct to the customer via farmers' markets (no wholesale), giving the customer ultimate freshness and an opportunity to talk directly with the grower.

  1. Hi Helen,
I’d be interested in selling your kits in our retail store, is this possible? Also, can they be posted (we get orders from all over Australia)?
    cheers, Lucinda

  2. Hi, I’m wondering if we have over-watered or over-heated our kit of swiss browns, there are quite a few pinhead sized brown heads that haven’t grown. We had the initial crop, then a smaller one, and then a crop of 3. I can send a photo of the soil …

    • Hi Bel,
Possibly overwatered, but it’s hard to say without seeing a photo. The best thing to do now is scratch up the top 1-2 cm peat layer with a kitchen fork so it looks loose and crumbly again and keep it slightly moist. This will turn over the pinhead-sized mushrooms that haven’t grown, and encourage a new crop to start. We are at the Eltham Farmers’ Market this weekend if you drop by to chat about it.
      Regards, Helen

  3. Hi, I just have a question about my mushroom kit. There seems to be a black fine dust that has covered the mushrooms (and the cupboard), what is it? Are the mushrooms still ok to eat?

    Thanks!

    • Hi Abbi, if your mushrooms have opened up flat, it’s likely they have released spores, which are brown/red in colour (still fine to eat). To ensure we’re talking about the same thing, give us a call on 0408 359 747. Regards, Helen.
