Join a vibrant food culture, growing and eating local

Covering all matters food across North East Melbourne

Whether you are a local food producer, want to eat local food, grow veggies in your garden or just want to meet like-minded folks, Local Food Connect is for you. Join now.

Eltham Farmers’ Market, a Local Food Connect initiative, is held every Sunday.

The purpose of this website and associated newsletter is twofold: to promote all aspects of local food around North East Melbourne and to make people around North East Melbourne feel part of a local food community.

The material is centred on 5 databases:

  1. Upcoming local food-related events: all the upcoming events of various types, around 200 per month.
  2. Local food producers: pages on each of around 140 producers, both farmers and makers.
  3. Local community gardens: pages on each of the 70 community gardens in the area
  4. Local food swaps: details of the 30 food swaps in the area.
  5. Local food justice organisations: including ‘food is free’ sites, free food distribution organisations and free community meals.

These databases are brought together into an overall Local Food Directory which contains pages for each of 320 or so local food organisations.

In addition, there are articles written by a variety of local people on:

Marina’s globe artichoke recipe

My favourite globe artichoke recipe is to roast smallish to medium sized artichokes whole with a little bit of olive oil – can just put them in a moderate to hot oven for about half an hour to 45 mins, or until the leaves pull off easily.  You can then cool them down a bit and dip into garlicky salad dressing as you eat it leaf by leaf (stripping off the soft bit at the base with your teeth) – don’t expect to look dainty – this is cave-man territory. The roasting concentrates the flavour and also help them last longer without spoiling. I always leave the stalks on – they are good eating.

I have eaten the roasted artichokes over a week, keeping them in the fridge – good picnic food. You could make them last a bit longer by marinating them in vinegar and salt and a few herbs.”

Thanks Marina!

Christmas baking

cakeHaven’t done that for many years. It reminded me of her and of how, from the age of 12, I used to make two cakes each year for her – one cake was for Christmas and one for New Year. I’d mix the butter and dark brown sugar for ages by hand with a big wooden spoon till the mixture was light and creamy. I really appreciate my Kitchen Aid!

Thanks for the memories Grandma.”

Bhutan compared with China

Just as I have been reading that the small country of Bhutan is moving towards totally organic farming as part of its GNH (gross national happiness), I heard on the radio this week that China is going the other way. In the past, China’s food supplies have come from small to medium farms mainly located around the outskirts of the cities. Because of the new demands from the growing middleclass, the Chinese government is closing  down these small farms and going to big monoculture type agricultural businesses… more pesticide use, food miles, etc.

Food Swap at Edendale, Eltham

Michele has run this swap for the last couple of years and is passionate about engaging people to try new fruit and vegetables. Thank you Michele! Unfortunately she is unable to continue with the swap next year so we are looking for a new facilitator for the Eltham Swap. It requires someone willing to setup, with help, each month, keep records of food swapped and liaise with members of the Local Food community. Are you that person? If so, please contact LFC Food Swap Coordinator Fay Loveland ph 0405 790150, or fay.loveland@gmail.com.

LFC Membership

We need members so that we can pay for and offer public liability insurance to various local food activities. It also enables us pay for printing of promotional materials etc. Grants are another way to acquire money for these activities.

Why am I a member? To help develop local activities which may lead to more of the community accessing and eating fresh, chemical-free food that has been grown ethically and cooked simply. It is also a bonus if the food hasn’t travelled thousands of kilometres and has less packaging. Food Swaps, community gardens, food co-ops, farmers’ markets, organic food shops, kitchen garden programs, food box programs, herd shares and more all offer a choice of how to access the food in a way to suit me and my family.

We are inviting you to help us. Become a financial member of LFC for $25 p.a. Join a project which will enable you to access the type of food that you want. Help write grants to continue to develop projects listed above and many more.
