Farmers’ Market

The Eltham market is on again this Sunday, May 25, 9am -1pm, with a variety of farmers and producers in attendance with their fresh produce to sell. This market is now Victorian Farmers Market Association (VFMA) accredited, which means that stallholders have to follow certain guidelines to sell at the market. Come along and chat to our farmers and producers and find out more of where your food purchases come from and how they are produced. Reduce packaging by bringing your own bags and trolleys, and even your own coffee mug if you purchase from the coffee stall! If you are a home grower, bring along some of your surplus to swap with other home growers between 10 and 11. Then, why not stay to listen to a permacultural ecological electroswing ukulele player and singer Charlie Mgee at 11:30 am! Maybe you could then wander down to the Eltham Village with the children for free face painting.

Supporting our farmers

I heard an interesting story recently of a local lady who lives next door to a vegetable farmer. The lady buys the farmer’s produce from the organic store in town. When asked by the shopkeeper why she didn’t just visit her neighbour and buy direct from him, she said “I know he would insist on me taking the veggies for free. This way, he is getting a fair price for his produce and hence an income with which to maintain his farm, buy new equipment, etc”.

Another of our local farmers has begun a scheme whereby a group of farmers local to her are donating a small amount of produce each week to a box scheme to help a small number of families going through hard times. This same farmer is working with other parents at her daughter’s secondary school to convert the canteen to only supplying organic food to the students.

Free Trade Deal with Japan

As you may be aware, Australia has signed a ‘free trade deal’ with Japan. The Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance argues: “As Japan is a net importer of food, the trade barriers and tariffs that Japan has in place are there to protect her own farmers and food sovereignty. If trade is meant to be mutually beneficial, how does the reduction in tariffs benefit Japanese farmers? It doesn’t. A very small minority of Australian farmers might benefit from this trade agreement, but the bulk of Japanese farmers will suffer. There is no mutuality or reciprocity in this trade agreement, other than the vague and untested assertion that ‘consumers will benefit’.”

Talk and permaculture garden tour

The Eltham Garden POD are visiting Drew and Ange’s on Sunday 18 May 2-4pm. Drew, Ange, and occasionally their teen daughters, have been developing their half-hectare site in Wattle Glen as an integrated plant and animal permaculture system over the past few years.

“Wattle Glen Farmlet” has a relatively large netted orchard, large tanks and new citrus and nut planting in the zone two areas. Two short-legged sheep, Victa and Rover, convert grass to manure. They also keep happy chooks and ducks.

“Our focus now is to use local species plants and green manure to build soil resilience in drought conditions, and to manage the challenge of rats, rabbits and possums dining on our produce …
We’d love to see you to share ideas!”
