Seasonal availability – what is available at the market

The lists below are from four markets chosen at random across a one year period: Winter 2015 (August 9th), Spring 2015 (November 22nd), Summer 2016 (February 28th) and Autumn 2016 (May 22nd). It is a list of what was actually available at these particular markets.

Key points:

• For both fruit and veggies, a full range of seasonal produce is available at the market throughout the year.
• The availability of fruit is highly seasonal, with only applies and lemons being available throughout the year.
• All fruit is available in either Spring or Summer or both.
• More than half of all veggies (26 of 45) are available throughout the year.
• Some summer-grown veggies are long lasting and thus available all year (e.g. pumpkins), whilst others are short lasting and thus only available during summer (e.g. cucumber, rockmelon and sweetcorn). Others have a growing season which extends into Autumn (e.g. capsicum, eggplant and tomato).
• A couple of veggies are only available in Spring: asparagus and broad beans.
