Are you interested in how to have a productive garden in the modern home space – the 450 square metre block on a new estate, how to grow attractive plants with low water use and how to cope with builder’s rubble and poor draining soils?

Cara’s garden is testament to the fact that smaller gardens can be highly productive and attractive while still allowing for family space. In a new estate where small allotments are dominated by the actual house, when left with little space for greenery it is important to design it well and anticipate issues with the existing soil and sun aspect. Cara has built her garden with several years of continual soil improvement using organically recycled household scraps. Her healthy fruit trees and the abundance of produce from neat beds have benefited from this soil enrichment. Her ornamental plants have been chosen to survive the harsh summers with little water and many are of local provenance. This garden and the expertise of the owner is a must-see for others in similar situations wanting to convert their space into an edible and sustainable haven.
