First birthday celebration notes:
In 2015, two intrepid food and garden enthusiasts – Carol and Tess – decided that Warrandyte was the perfect location for a food swap. In September 2015, they embarked on the inaugural swap in the beautiful setting of Warrandyte’s community garden. Swappies were greeted with an array of citrus (fresh and preserved), rhubarb, pumpkin, leafy greens, herbs, seedlings and seeds along with lemon butter and cakes, all reflecting the new season’s offerings. A consistent following swiftly emerged and the addition of new member Liz to the organising team added an additional bloom to the team.

Late harvest, we welcomed Elise to the team, a vibrant injection to our monthly meets and a timely addition in the absence of Tess (who is travelling through the Americas). Tomatoes reigned in abundance showing us a plethora of varieties, shapes, sizes and taste. Eggplant, zucchinis, squash, cucumbers, celeriac, peas, potatoes, garlic, strawberries, nashi all graced our tables. Preserving the year’s bounty, a number of dehydrated products appeared: mushroom, apples, bananas and candied peel along with jams, jellies, marmalades, chutney and relishes.

Later, the cold air of winter descended upon us but it did not diminish the enthusiasm of our swappies, who enjoyed the warmth of a welcome cup of tea and a vigorous exchange of tips ideas and problem solving. Variety continued with brassicas, citrus, strawberry, boysenberry plants, lemongrass, vietnamese mint, chutneys, artichokes, seedlings and seeds. For those with dormant gardens, pots, egg cartons, jars, recipes, reusable produce bags, worm juice, garden soap on a rope were also shared.

In our first year, we have celebrated vibrant new foods and ideas, eclectic contributions from all who visit, along with the shared friendship and celebration of all things food, garden and community.

Thank you to our monthly regulars, as well as to new friends; without you there is no swap and no joy!

Carol, Tess, Elise and Liz would like to acknowledge the Warrandyte community garden for their generosity and hospitality enabling the use of the gazebo each month.

The food is held on the first Saturday of the month from 9-10am and you can like us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/warrandytefoodswap). If you don’t have anything to swap, come down anyway and swap your ideas for produce.
