Garden volunteer at Bridge Darebin

Bridge Darebin in Preston is looking for someone with some spare time and a green thumb.

Bridge Darebin Green is an outdoor initiative focusing on sustainability and learning for all ages and abilities. The purpose-built wicking garden beds have been designed to be wheelchair accessible, with the intent to plant edibles to be used in cooking for Bridge Darebin’s Moon Rabbit Cafe and Laneway Lunches.

At the moment, the garden is a little neglected and in need of some regular love and attention. They are looking for someone with experience with gardening that would like to take on the planting and upkeep of the contents of the garden on a regular basis. This person would be supported by students of their gardening classes during the terms when the class is in session, as well as some ad hoc volunteers. While there will be others to help, they are looking for the volunteer to take on the overall care and responsibility of the garden.

General responsibilities
  • Water all planters/pots/garden beds.
  • Weed planters/pots/garden bed.
  • Remove rubbish/cigarette butts from garden beds.
  • Plant any new vegetables/herbs.
  • Water plants on Moon Rabbit tables, if needed.
  • Collect worm castings and place into the soil in the planters/pots/garden beds.
  • Attend to spare succulents that can be sold at the market or via the café (propagate, re-pot, etc).

In addition to the above, at the beginning they will need to work with facilities/Moon Rabbit to decide the best plants to plant for kitchen use.

When

Flexible. Ideally once a week for a couple of hours, or more as necessary in warmer weather. Likely will be a few full days in the beginning to get the garden back in action, then regularly 1-2 times a week depending on the weather.

Starting ASAP.
